Unpredictable electricity prices or one stable price for the next 3 years?
Without a protection plan, you may be spending a lot more than you realize. What do you think will happen to electricity prices in the next 3 years?

How your green plan works
With the Green Electricity plan, every year of the plan, Direct Energy will purchase certified renewable energy credits ("RECs") on your behalf representing 9,000 kWh of consumption for our residential customers or 27,350 kWh of consumption for our commercial customers. You will continue to receive your electricity supply from Ontario's electricity grid but will be supporting renewable electricity generation. Being "Green" with Direct Energy means that the plan you are on helps you to off-set some of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with your consumption of electricity.
What are RECs?
A renewable energy credit ("REC") represents the environmental, social and technical attributes of 1,000 kilowatt-hours (or 1 MWh) of electricity generated from certified renewable resources. The electricity generated by renewable energy sources is sold into the electricial grid while the environmental attributes (the RECs) are split off and sold separately. Direct Energy has purchased those RECs for the purpose of including them with our Green Plan so that you can take the benefit.
Does this mean I will be getting a different kind of electricity?
No. Your electricity is the same electricity commodity whether or not you enroll in the Green Power Plan. You will be consuming electricity from Ontario's electricity grid, which contains electricity generated by various sources. However, the RECs purchased by Direct Energy for your Plan represent the renewable electricity that has been supplied to the grid to cover your consumption (up to an annual limit of 9,000 kWh for our residential customers and 27,350 kWh for our commercial customers).
What does it mean for a REC to be certified?
We purchase our RECs from electricity generators that have been certified by an independent federal government program which was launched in 1988 and is now managed by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing Inc., which certifies the environmental quality of a broad range of product categories according to strict requirements that limit those products' environmental impacts and air emissions. Although the RECs we purchase are certified by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing Inc. under the Certification Criteria Document CCD-003, the Green Electricity Plan itself has not been certified.
